Born in Paris in 1964, Bangkok-based French cartoonist Stephane Peray is better known by his nom de plume “Stephff”.
He came to Bangkok for the first time in 1984 as a sailor with his ship when he was in the French Navy.
He returned to settle down in Thailand in 1989 as a photo reporter – an early life rich in experiences but very poor in income.
He finally got his first break as a freelance political cartoonist in the French newspaper “LE MEKONG”, launched in Phnom Penh in 1994.
He quit photography in 1997 and became a full-time daily cartoonist with several newspapers, including “The Far Eastern Economic Review”, “The international Herald Tribune”, “The Korea Times”, “The Phnom Penh Post”, “The Jakarta Post” and many more.
He worked with Bangkok based newspaper “The Nation” from 2003-to 2019, becoming their main cartoonist. His cartoon column “Ministry of Farang Affairs”, making fun of Farang life in Thailand (but also making fun of the locals), has been published in many magazines, as well in the Saturday edition of “The Nation”.
He is also a painter with works held in numerous private collections around the world and is currently working on a movie script.
His hobby is collecting antique and primitive ethnic folk art. His personal goal is to assemble the world’s most comprehensive collection of Thai hermit masks (Ruesee PorGae).
